Islands Without Make-up

GUILTY OF:

Blue and White washed houses and that Sunset at Oia

The ultimate destination for Romance and the Fira Cliff-side double room and Donkey Hire usually comes bundled with the expectation of a proposal.

BREIF WANDERLUST OR SERIOUS RELATIONSHIP ?

Meh. But thats my bad- I don't do Romance

but I might add, Santorini is a surreal and intriguing place in the off season, scoring 3/5 for the  pockets of creepy desserted vinyards and apocolyptic wandering donkeys.

Arriving in Santorini at the end of summer I wasn't sure what to expect- Do the Greek Islands just cease to exist when summer ends or do they carry on in a bubble of warm sunshine while the rest of Europe snap chills? So I took a walk down the hill from the main town of Fira and headed towards the coast. This took about two hours and as I got closer to the beach, the road started to wind through deserted properties and creepy dried up vineyards. All I could hear was the wind and jingling bells. I didn't see another person for ages but there were old cars, rusted out boats and creepy mannequins propped up against fences watching out over the vineyards and occasionally I'd see a small herd of Donkeys kept on the land. It was the Donkeys that were wearing the bells I could hear.

On the beach, the waves were crashing up against an ocean wall and these six swans were sheltering from the sea by floating among the boats moored at the jetty, the whole place was so surreal.

Score/5:  ♥♥♥♡♡

Santorini

....and off the beaten track
